You need about 120mls for one feed. For young babies they say a feed is 150mls x wt in kgs divided by no. of feeds in a day... so if bub is 4kg then it's 150 x 4 (600) divided by say 8 and that is 120. My baby is 4 wks old, I've had to express from the beginning to increase milk supply at first could only get maybe 10 - 20mls but now can get anywhere from 50 - 150! I usually pump about an hour or two after a BF alternating 5mins each side for 20mins total (so 5 on left 5 on right and then repeat once). I always make sure I don't pump within an hour of next feed. I find my supply is often best at 3 or 4 in the am... not a convenient time I know, but prolactin is at its highest then and bub usually sleeps a bit longer at night therefore more time for boobies to fill up! Also, you can keep milk in fridge for about 2 or 3 days so you don't have to put it straight in the freezer, you can keep in fridge until you fill up bottle. Expressing can be really time consuming for little volume, it's gets easier with lots of practice and I find it helpful to either have my baby on my chest (skin to skin) when I do it to encourage the let down or if that isn't possible to look at photos or think about her. Thinking about how much volume you are getting or concentrating on pumping can inhibit let down so watch tellie or read a book and try to ignore it! I hope this helps and enjoy your night out! I would also recommend trying to bottle feed your expressed milk once or twice before you go out - if baby has never had a bottle, she might refuse bottle at first so you want to be confident that won't happen when you go out!
